More of interest to spy-story lovers and novelists than historians, I would think.   The forces that were involved included Young America and some of their offshoots, such as The Knights of the Golden Circle. Now you can find all sorts of information concerning The Knights of the Golden Circle which operated after the Civil War began, but prior to the Civil War the history of the Knights is lacking - very hard to come by.

The Knights of the Golden Circle (KGC) was a secret society in the midth-century United States. The original objective of the KGC was to annex a "golden circle" of territories in Mexico, Central America, Confederate States of America and the Caribbean as slave abolitionism in the United States increased after the Dred Scott Decision ofthe members proposed a separate Headquarters: Cincinnati, Ohio, United States.
